Tapuac's flooding woe to be solved soon
By Dino R. Zabala

THE perennial flooding problem that usually occurs along the national highway in Tapuac road, particularly within the vicinity of Pedrito's Restaurant, would soon be solved.

Barangay captain Joaquin "Jake" Reyes said this in an exclusive telephone interview last Tuesday.

According to Reyes, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the City Engineering Office (CEO) already coordinated with his office on how the problem could be solved with the identification of areas where the waters would flow. The water in areas usually becomes stagnant along the highway.

Reyes also disclosed that the City Government, through Mayor Benjamin S. Lim, approved an initial P4 million for the funding of the project for the construction of new drainage systems and feeder waterways along the Tapuac road and the Francisco Duque (formerly Amado-Tapuac) Road.

He pointed out that of the P4 million project allocation, P2 million will be utilized for the Tapuac road drainage which will pass through Cuison road and out to the Calmay river.

On the other hand, the other P2 million will be spent also for the drainage construction along the Duque Road, passing through a feeder waterway along Calguz (Calulut-De Guzman) area that shall also outflow to the Calmay River.

"Hopefully, my administration shall be able solve the problems of flooding in our barangay which has long been criticized by the barangay folks even during the past administrations. The project is expected to commence sometime next week after the bidding shall have been done though," the village chief pointed out.

During the phone interview, Reyes expressed gratitude to the city chief executive for giving attention to the problem that yearly affects their barangay, as well as students who are enrolled at a University established at the fast-developing educational and commercial area within the city.

"I am very thankful to Mayor Lim for supporting the good cause for my constituents and for giving utmost attention to a perennial problem that has not been done in the past. And I am very happy," Reyes stated.

Reyes also thanked the efforts given by City Administrator Rafael "Paeng" F. Baraan whom he said was very supportive and cooperative in helping work out project plans beneficial to Barangay Tapuac.

Moreover, Reyes disclosed that his barangay is still continuously undertaking the "food-for-work" program, which is the bayanihan (working together) style of clearing the creeks, drainages and clogged waterways, coupled with beautification and cleanliness program initiated by the City Government.

The village chief said there are at least 40 volunteer individuals from his barangay who report daily working for half day in undertaking the particular program.

"We have not stopped as to the program is concerned. The barangay folks are very cooperative and they are now starting to reap the efforts they have contributed and enjoy the benefits of being in unison for a better place to live in," Reyes pointed out.
