Another barangay chief nabbed in anti-drug drive
By Fred P. Macaraeg

CALASIAO -- A barangay captain in Manaoag town and his younger brother were arrested Monday night in Barangay San Miguel, Calasiao for alleged possession of illegal drugs and unlicensed firearms.

Police seized some 50 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu and other drug paraphernalia from Mermer barangay captain Armando Barrozo and his younger brother Jaime, allegedly a barangay councilman of San Ramon, Manaoag.

Also confiscated in their possession was a class A Danao City-made caliber .357 revolver with 12 bullets.

Supt. Candito Quijardo, municipal police chief, said he is optimistic that the Barrozo brothers would be denied bail because they were arrested in a buy-bust operation.

Police intelligence operatives also allegedly recovered from the brothers the P1,000 marked money used in the operation and P2,500 derived from other drug sales.

"After one month of patient monitoring by our intelligence operatives, they made a test-buy and it was positive," Quijardo said.

The police chief said the Barrozos could have been illegally peddling drugs not only in this town but in the cities of Dagupan and Urdaneta as well.

Quijardo said police had difficulty apprehending the Barrozo brothers because they operated on a "door to door" basis.

He said Armando's children called him after they learned of their father's arrest.

Early last July, town police in coordination with Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) operatives apprehended Taloyan barangay captain Virgilio dela Cruz and six other persons in a local inn where they allegedly had a pot session.

The Office of the Provincial Prosecutor, however, downgraded the case filed against the seven persons from use and possession of illegal drugs to possession of drug paraphernalia. Police admitted they did not catch the suspects in the act.

Dela Cruz and the six suspects are out on bail.
