Mayoralty bet’s supporter shot dead
By Liway Manantan-Yparraguirre

SAN NICOLAS – A supporter of a mayoralty candidate here was shot dead Saturday morning by a supporter of a rival camp.

One of the suspects voluntarily surrendered to the police hours later. Allegedly, upon reaching the police station, he was punched by the victim’s companion, who is a son of the mayoralty candidate.

The shooting incident happened at around 8:00 a.m. Saturday along Elarde Street fronting the public market.

The victim was identified as a certain Jonjon Sambrano, a known supporter and driver of mayoralty candidate Leoncio Saldivar.

Initial police investigation disclosed that the victim was onboard a motorcycle with the son of Saldivar seated at the back when he was shot. Sambrano died on the spot.

The suspect was identified as Albert Teñozo, 32, a resident of Zone 6, Barangay San Roque here.

Operatives of the San Nicolas Police Station are conducting a follow-up investigation on the case, especially on the report that an unidentified companion of the suspect allegedly sustained a gunshot wound.

Police are still trying to establish the motive of the killing.

SPO3 Danilo Pascua, police desk officer and investigator, said they heard successive gunshots prompting them to rush to the public market, located a few meters away from the police station, to investigate.

Upon reaching the area, they saw a man sprawled at the pavement.

Pascua said the positive identification of the suspect was provided by tricycle drivers who witnessed the incident.

Pascua said Teñozo later called the police station and requested that he be fetched from his house as he would voluntarily surrender.

He further said the suspect also surrendered a caliber .45 pistol with three live ammunitions.

>From the initial statement given by Teñozo, his companion allegedly sustained a gunshot wound in the leg. The police are trying to trace which hospital Teñozo’s companion was brought to.

Police Senior Insp. Rhode A. Espero, San Nicolas police chief, said appropriate charges are being readied against Teñozo.

San Nicolas is one of the probable areas of immediate concern in the province because of its history of intense political rivalry during elections.

Incumbent Mayor Christopher Jones Rodrigo is running for re-election against Saldivar, a nephew of his opponent during the 2001 election. The suspect was identified as a supporter of Rodrigo’s father Conrado, former mayor and now president of the municipal Liga ng mga Barangay.

The former mayor served for three consecutive terms. A sharpshooter, he earlier survived an ambush, killing in the process two of the assassin.
