Poe wins in Pangasinan
MOVIE actor Fernando Poe Jr. is leading in the presidential race with 42,233 votes in Pangasinan against his rival President Arroyo although the province is supposed to be a Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) bailiwick.
Poe got 487,463 votes while the President earned 445,230 votes. The movie actor won in five of the six districts of Pangasinan while Arroyo got the fourth district, a known turf of House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.
Meanwhile, all the six congressmen in the province, who belong to the administration coalition party, have been reelected.
Gov. Victor E. Agbayani said the local Lakas leaders had tried their best to campaign for Arroyo but since both Poe and Arroyo are native Pangasinenses, or perceived native Pangasinenses, it made the battle more difficult in the province.
Agbayani said the province was divided between its son and daughter.
It will be recalled that when Speaker Jose C. de Venecia Jr. ran for the presidency against ousted President Estrada in 1998, the Pangasinenses voted for him, being a native son. De Venecia obtained 75 percent of the vote in the province leading Estrada by about 400,000 votes.
"This time, since both candidates come from here, the battle became more difficult," Agbayani said.
Sen. Panfilo Lacson, a brother-in-law in Bolinao town, ranked third in the presidential race in Pangasinan, garnering 62,397 votes. Eddie Villanueva got 52,474 votes while Sen. Raul Roco received 30,777 votes.
In the vice presidential race, Sen. Noli de Castro won over Sen. Loren Legarda by 58,965 votes. De Castro got a vote of 547,276 while Legarda, 488,311 votes.
Herminio Aquino and Rodolfo Pajo were on third and fourth place, respectively.
The senatorial candidates who made it to Magic 12 in Pangasinan are Manuel "Mar" Roxas, Ramon "Bong" Revilla, Jamby Madrigal, Lito Lapid, Pia Cayetano, Richard Gordon, Aquilino Pimentel, Juan Ponce Enrile, Alfredo Lim, Rodolfo Biazon, Ernesto Maceda and Miriam Defensor-Santiago.
For Pangasinan congressmen, aside de Venecia, the winners are Arthur Celeste, first district; Amado Espino Jr., second district; Generoso Tulagan, third district; Mark Cojuangco, fifth disrict; and Conrado Estrella III, sixth district. FPM
