River mouth widened, ready for rainy season By Dino R. Zapanta
MORE than 200 meters wide and a depth of 3.5 meters have already been accomplished in the widening and dredging of the Pantal River's mouth, particularly the area between Barangay Pugaro-Suit and Sitio Sabangan in Bonuan Gueset.
According to Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 1 Director Fidel Ginez, the constricted river's mouth has already been widened just in time for the coming rainy season.
Ginez, together with City Engineer Virginia V. Rosario, City Assistant Engineer Marcelo Prado and planning head Athena Arenas, conducted an on-site inspection of the project Thursday afternoon.
During the inspection, Ginez noted that a small portion of an accreted island has yet to be shaved off and dredged to further let the outflow of water coming from the upstream run faster.
"I have instructed the dredge master to conduct an additional widening and dredging of the river's mouth, and that they should flair the delta itself, so the waters will flow easily out to the sea. This in turn, will also avert further flooding in the city and its surrounding municipalities," explained Ginez, who is also the concurrent project manager of the Agno Flood Control Systems Office (Afcso).
In as much as the DPWH already achieved a lot, Ginez said he would still commission another bigger dredging asset, the PDDP-1 dredge 5, which can double the job of the current dredge Visayas being utilized at the river's mouth.
"By the end of June this year, the dredging and widening of the river's mouth will be finished. But we shall keep on dredging the river's delta to sustain the smooth flow of waters out to the sea. We shall also conduct dredging operations going upstream, in order that the river waters would not overflow from its banks," Ginez said.
