Crisologo: 7 post-election expectations
By Eddie C. Crisologo

THANK God, it's over. Those who won convincingly will most likely escape protests unlike those who made it with slim margins who might face an electoral protest. This early, and for the following days, to come the intensity & passion of pre-election campaign will follow through because of the inadequacy of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to fast track official results and media's diverse reportorial flow. But as always, generally everything will simmer down and life goes back to normalcy. Winners will savor their fresh mandate to govern and losers will be licking their wounds.

But the biggest challenge and responsibility lies in the hands of the people to exercise vigilance and involvement in matters of governance amd social services. The elected officials are there to serve and not to be served. Their leadership and management schemes must be reflective of the will of the people and focus to common beneficially. Any deviation from this expectation is considered a violation of their mandate.

In the City of Dagupan, we are fortunate that many of our elected officials are Rotarians of the finest mold. They adhered to the four-way-test and that's all there is to it. Anyone who is seeker of truth, advocate of fairness, beneficially to all concern, and a builder of good will and friendship will reign and function judiciously to the betterment of the country, holistically. We all hope they do.

Every election is supposed to be the start of a cleansing and weeding out process. The bigger burden and responsibility is seeing to it that elected officials do their job in line with their covenant with the people.

Let's buckle down to work and be a more upright citizen.

Aside from individual expertise and experience, we can safely factor in team play in governance from House Speaker Joe de Venecia, Mayor Benjie Lim and Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez in accomplishing infrastructure and social service programs very much needed to heighten the economic growth of the city. We have the road to market-housing program, garbage disposal programs cut out to make Dagupan City a business and tourist haven in the years to come.

The euphoria of re-elected officials like them must be translated in meaningful and constructive terms to meet the expectations of the city populace, especially the marginalized sector.

Improvement and renewal of trust and confidence must never be mishandled or misconstrued as a license for corruption and ineptitude. Prudent handling and spending of public funds will go a long way in propelling progress and abundance of job and business opportunities in the city.

Many share the vision of Mayor Lim for Dagupan that's why he obtained a fresh mandate in overwhelming terms. The people simply love the way he lighted up the streets, give them a world-class park, modern garbage collection system, modernizing and upgrading the City Hall's services and paving the way for world class public market has virtually transformed Mayor Benjie Lim as epitome of a leader per excellence and a management expert accentuated with charismatic political savvy.

Like the business empire that he started, things will continue working its way to progress for Dagupan like magic.

The legislative branch of the city headed by Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez, who equally received a renewed mandate together with 10 elected councilors, is expected to team up with Mayor Benjie Lim in getting this city in constant progressive mode.

If majority of our electorate belonging to the C, D, & E sectors of every community could only articulate their expectations of the winning politicians, it would come out this way:

1. Give as more of basic social services like medicare, job opportunities, housing and education.

2. Focus your concerns and concerted effort to the advantage of the marginalized sector and the community in general.

3. Dignify your positions being service oriented and humane in your disposition. Respect & recognition is best earned by believing in what you do, and doing what you believe in.

4. Lastly, accept our fervent hope & prayer for your good health and sustained concern for the betterment of the community.

Congratulations and best wishes.
