Servito: Glorious in victory, agony in defeat
By Floro Servito

THERE must have been celebrations of all sorts for victors in the just concluded elections last May 10.

A thanksgiving mass for the believers in Christ Jesus, lavish preparations and beverages who prefer to languish in vodka and perhaps to the moneyed-a few days vacation in a foreign land to relax awhile, drowning or forgetting the hectic rigors of the campaign process.

To them, I must recall and remind about those promises or pledges in order to obtain the sacred votes of the electorate. Now that they emerged victorious, I only wish that they would live up to their promises and not to fool again the people, especially the lowly masses who are at the mercy of the powerful and the mighty. Thus the old adage "the poor gets poorer while the rich gets richer."

When shall we also give a break to the needy? Can we not give them a rosy picture at the end of the road?

The government must therefore address the problems of poverty and emancipating the living conditions of the have-nots. The opportune time is now before it is too late. Before they go to the mountains in refuge taking the law into their hands not minding anymore the tragic consequences of their actions. This is a serious matter that should be reckoned with.

The newly elected and re-elected leaders should urgently take the course of priority action into realizing prosperity, equal justice for all, honest, dedicated and untarnished determination sans vested interests, if at all we mean business to the right direction to govern.

To our defeated candidates, we share the feeling of sadness saddled with perhaps financial indebtedness and hard-earned money put to waste. This may be so, but not a hindrance into looking for other horizon s for a better place in the society and the desire to be of service to the people with honor and dignity.

Keep on and don't be swayed with insecurity and despair but rather a challenge. Where did I fail? What went wrong in the decision to seek public office? These and more problems nay mind boggling, why the failure? But not everything is lost. We have yet plenty of room to gain. Don't lose hope. Strive for the better. It is said, "behind the clouds, the sun is still shining," isn't it? Better luck next time. We learn from our mistakes.

Finally, it's a lot better if everyone should concern himself in "not what the government can do for you, but rather ask what you can do for the government."
