Pangasinan, Mangaldan are anti-drug awardees in region
By Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre

LINGAYEN -- The Anti-Illegal Drug Special Operation Task (Aidsotf) of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO) beat its counterparts in Region I in terms of accomplishments in the anti-drugs campaign thus earning the first recognition given out by the Regional Aidsotf-1.

On the other hand, Mangaldan Police Station and its chief of police, Chief Insp. Harris Fama, were adjudged as the best in their respective categories.

The Regional Anti-Illegal Drug Special Operations Task Group-1 celebrated its first anniversary Tuesday by giving awards to outstanding units and individuals involved in the anti-drug campaign.

The guest speaker was La Union Gov. Victor F. Ortega. The event was held at Camp Oscar M. Florendo in San Fernando City, La Union, home of the police regional office.

The award for the Best Provincial Aidsotf was received by P/Senior Supt. Mario R. Sandiego, Pangasinan police provincial director.

Immediately after he assumed as provincial police director on June 19, 2003, Sandiego implemented an anti-drug campaign performance audit. He directed the 48 chiefs of police in Pangasinan to submit accomplishment reports covering a given period. As a result of the performance audit, six police chiefs were relieved from their posts. Fama was adjudged as Best Anti-Drugs campaign Police Commissioned Officer (municipal category) while Mangaldan Police Station's Aidstof was proclaimed as best group in region 1 (municipal category).

Other awardees from Mangaldan are Barangay Bari (Best Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council) while Lempton Agricola, a civilian and president of the Anti-Drug Abuse Movement (Project Adam) and co-worker of Mangaldan PS in the campaign was given special recognition.

Meantime, Kilos Laya Laban sa Droga (Kill Droga)-Dagupan chapter was also given recognition.

Fama assumed as Mangaldan police chief only last April 6. He immediately initiated intelligence build-up in the 30 barangays here. Also, he was able to establish good working relations not only with the local government but also with different non-government organizations and thus earning the respect of the citizens.

The Mangaldan police unit was able to arrest 51 pushers/users with appropriate charges filed in court. A total of about 43.52 grams of shabu, 270.85 grams and one marijuana stick, and a total of P47,450 in cash believed to be proceeds from illegal drugs were confiscated from the suspects during the operations.

Fama added they were able to assist two drug users for drug rehabilitation. On the other hand, 31 suspected pushers/users were invited to the Mangaldan Police Station where they took their oath of allegiance promising to stop their illegal drugs activity.

Fama said good community relations and constant information dissemination is important if you want to gain the trust of the people.
