Hog cholera cases noted

THE City Veterinary Office (CVO) noted cholera among hogs in which five pigs had already been recorded dead.

"Since the hog cholera is caused by a viral disease, the affected pig would easily affect other pigs," said city veterinarian Dr. Fernando Banchiran.

The CVO condemned the cholera-affected pigs and had them torched and buried immediately.

He disclosed, however, that not one of the persons, who had eaten cholera-affected pigs, were contaminated by the disease.

Accordingly, the five dead pigs were among the 10 pigs being cared by a hog raiser at his compound in the island barangay of Pugaro.

Banchiran said the remaining five pigs have been given anti-cholera vaccination.

Sun.Star learned that the last incidence of hog cholera was in 2002 where there had been several cases in the various barangays, especially in the eastern part of the city.

But the CVO managed to contain the spread of the disease.

Due to this, the CVO received a commendation for such accomplishment.

Banchiran said they have scheduled to conduct vaccination of pigs in Barangays Bacayao Norte and Bacayao Sur on August 10.

He said that communities like Calasiao, Sta. Barbara and San Carlos City, there are already recorded cases of hog cholera.

"To prevent possible transfer of the virus in these barangays, we will anticipate it by injecting the pigs in these areas so that it would no longer spread in the city," Banchiran said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Michael Maramba, city assistant veterinarian, said the vaccination of dogs with anti-rabies would already be continuous.

Maramba said they have already prepared a schedule for anti-rabies vaccination for the month of August and September in the city.

On August 11, the vaccination will be conducted in Barangay Salapingao; in Barangay Pugaro, August 12; Lomboy, August 17; Caranglaan, August 18; Tapuac, August 19; Pantal, particularly in A.B. Fernandez Avenue East at the back of Mel-Excel Hotel, August 20; Tebeng, August 24; Bonuan Gueset, August 25-26; and Bonuan Binloc, August 27-31.

For the next month, the schedule is for Malued, September 1; Bolosan, September 2; Barangay II, September 3; Poblacion Oeste, September 6; and Pogo Chico, September 7.
