Conversion of park as resettlement area deplored
DAGUPAN -- An environmental researcher has questioned the revival of the move to make a portion of Tondaligan, a declared national park, as a resettlement area for informal settlers in Dagupan City.
In a proclamation issued by the late President Diosdado Macapagal, "it is clear that not any portion of the park could be used for any other purpose," said Prof. Nicanor Melecio.
The Task Force on Housing on Housing and Squatters Resettlement has revived a plan to make 5.3 hectares of the park into a relocation site for squatters in the city.
Melecio said the City first made the proposal to Malacañang but the plan had been withdrawn because there was a better move that had been thought of.
He said even the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) would not agree of touching the Tondaligan because it is against Proclamation 98.
Melecio said the issue is not a trivial matter saying "we would be showing each other some documents."
Citing that time is running out against the poor informal settlers, he urged a search for alternative resettlement sites that are tenable.
"By tenable, I mean that there is question that will crop up. For example, the Tondaligan Park. That is highly questionable as an area," he said. FPM
