Manaoag council acts on plaint vs alcohol plant By Ben C. Erto
MANAOAG -- The Municipal Council committees on health and sanitation and on environment will conduct a joint committee hearing on a complaint of residents of Barangay Baritao against an alcohol plant in their community.
Councilors Raymund Viloria, committee on health chairman, and Wilfredo Sibayan, committee on environment chairman, thought of such a move after they conducted an ocular inspection of the Alko Distillers and its premises.
This developed after the municipal legislature received a letter-complaint from Baritao residents on pollution created by the establishment in the community.
Air pollution allegedly emanating from Alko Distillers has purportedly started inflicting respiratory illnesses among residents, like asthma, severe cough and headache and other ailments.
In a letter dated Sept. 8, 2004 and addressed to Mayor Napoleon D. Sales and the municipal legislative body, the residents said the fumes from the plant have made the roof of their houses in Baritao and in contiguous places become rusty.
They also said wastewater from the plant is reportedly disposed of into a nearby river.
The residents decided to approach the Municipal Council after their barangay officials reportedly did not act on their complaint.
But in an earlier radio interview, the barangay captain denied that the plant pollutes their air in their area.
