Barkadahan against drugs launched By Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre
LINGAYEN -- In line with the nationwide observance of the Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Month this November, the Pangasinan Anti-Drug Abuse Council (Padac) in coordination with the Dangerous Drugs Board will launch in the province the project "Barkadahan Kontra Droga".
This year's Drug Prevention and Control Month theme is "Barkada Mo, Barkada Ko, Nagkakaisa Laban Sa Droga."
The "Barkadahan Kontra Droga" is on one of the highlights of the province's celebration of Drugs-Free Pangasinan Week scheduled from November 22 to 26.
This activity will be held on November 23 at the Region I Medical Center's conference hall in Dagupan City.
Vice Gov. Oscar B. Lambino, Padac executive director, said the rationale behind this project is the result of recent studies with which profiles of drug users indicated that peer pressure now ranks as the main reason why young people turn into use of illegal drugs.
Accordingly, this factor has displaced the 'poor parent-child relationship' cause/reason given earlier by drug users on why they turned the drugs.
Lambino explained Barkadahan Kontra Droga will project the positive service and benefit of peer influence to veer young people from drug use.
"The personal social relationships of young people will be the government's most effective and potent force, campaign tool and agent of change against the drug problem besetting the country today," he stated.
Lambino said another highlight of the Drugs-Free Pangasinan Week is the Gawad Kontra Droga.
Recognition will be given to police stations, individuals, non-government organizations and local government units who recorded an outstanding performance or contribution in the drug demand and supply reduction this year.
The awarding ceremony will be held on November 24 at Lennox Hotel in Dagupan.
The award categories are biggest number of drug personalities apprehended and largest quantity of drugs seized (for police stations); best drug demand reduction program (LGU); most outstanding performance of an NGO and most outstanding performance by an individual.
Other activities lined-up are On the Spot Poster-Making and Essay-Writing Contests (November 22), and the 40-kilometer Lumbay Batik Gov. Victor Agbayani Run on November 26.
The Lumbay Batik is an annual marathon relay race event in Pangasinan participated in by high school students and out-of-school youths.
Starting point is set at Barangay Pinmaludpod in Urdaneta City, the race will end in front of the Pangasinan Provincial Capitol Building located in Lingayen.
