Pangasinan teams enter 3 'criterium' races

TWO accredited Pangasinan cycling teams are scheduled to battle the best in Philippine cycling by joining the First Cycling Search Invitational Criterium Series to be held in the cities of Manila, Tarlac and Vigan slated November 21, 28 and December 5.

This was learned from Jazy F. Garcia, proprietor of Jazy Sportswear, major sponsor of the two official Pangasinan squads.

Race director Ric Rodriguez disclosed to Sun.Star at the Manila hostilities will be run in 15 laps at the 4.3-kilometer Baywalk circuit and finishes in front of Diamond Hotel at Roxas Boulevard.

The Tarlac encounters will also be staged in 15 laps along Carlos P. Romulo Highway with a length of five kilometers per hotdog shape circuit and ends across the provincial capitol building.

The third and final clashes slated at the main thoroughfare of Vigan, likewise to be contested in 15 laps with a distance of 3.2 kilometers each round and winds up in front of the provincial capitol building in Vigan.

Rodriguez said that both the junior and the elite categories would be run in the same distance and with different start of time.

"The team that garnered the highest number of points after three Sundays of racing receives the top prize of P15,000. The first and second runners-up will be awarded P10,000 and P7,000 respectively, and likewise with trophies," said Rodriguez.

"Individual-through points system-and Sunday winners will also receive four figures in prizes plus incentives and also with trophies," he added.

Garcia said the "elite" category is skippered by 2003 Tour Pilipinas titlist Arnel Quirimit of Pozorrubio.

Backing him up are Baler Ravina of Asingan, Ericson Obosa of Manaoag, Reynaldo Navarro of San Jacinto, Sherwin Carrera of San Fabian and Emil Pablo of Umingan.

The junior division is captained by Guam-based Mangaldan-born Garcia and will be assisted by his town mates Renato Sembrano, Ariel Flores, Benigno Molina, Adrian Malanum and Sta. Barbara lone rider Loreto dela Carsel.
