Garcia wins Guam's mountain bike race By Jesus Garcia
MANGALDAN-born Jazy Garcia outsprinted Yankee rider Derek Norton in the last 100 meters to win the 2005 Red Dirt Race Series 2 held last Sunday morning at Nimitz Hill in Guam.
The mountain bike race started at Agueda Johnson Middle School proceeded up the pipeline to Nimitz Hill military housing, went around the road to Guam High School, followed down the pipeline and ended back at the school.
"This is the first time I have been on a mountain bike race since 2000," Garcia said.
Garcia, who is leaving soon to race in the Tour Pilipinas slated May 5-15, also said he would be joining seven races in his home of birth in April before joining the 10-day race.
"It will be an honor to ride in the race which my father won three times. My team, the Pitaki Boyz, is famous in the Philippines. I don't know how well I will do because of my age, but I will try my best," he said.
Garcia's winning time for the ten-mile course was 43 minutes, 26 seconds, while Norton was two seconds behind. Third finisher James Sherman was four ticks adrift Garcia.
Kinn Madden was the first female to finish.
"I liked this race better than last year because it has few fast downhills. Perfect for a rider like me," she said. Madden finished 24th overall in a time of 60:26.
Another Filipino rider Paul Ballesteros formerly from Baguio City was fourth, 22 seconds off the pace.
There were 52 participants and all of them survived the short and mountainous terrain.
