Ex-Marlboro tour champ wins Mayor Leo de Vera Cup By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.
MALABON pride and former Marlboro Tour king Victor Espiritu used his international skill, outwitted his 89 rivals to rule the Mayor Leo "Boy" de Vera's Cup last Wednesday and pocketed the P7,000 top prize plus trophy.
Espiritu, 29, the 1996 Marlboro Tour titlist and skipper of the continental squad Pagcor Trade Team, floated with the big guns in the early run of the race, made a remarkable move on the last 10 kilometers and outsprinted his breakaway partner Wilfredo Calosa on the last 200 meters to win by a two-bike length at the crowded downtown finish in front of Bayambang plaza.
The aging Calosa, 38, of San Jacinto town, bagged P5,000 and also with trophy. The two identically clocked the 168 kilometers flat trek in four hours, one minute and 4.70 seconds.
Merculio Ramos Jr. of Tarlac City landed third, 38 seconds behind and good for P4,000 likewise with trophy while 2004 PNP-Sun.Star Pangasinan Cycling Grand Prix champion Bernard Luzon of San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija checked in fourth worth P3,000 and province mate Orly Villanueva of the well-known Excellent Team came in fifth to earn P2,000.
Rounding up the top ten and received P1,000 each are Baler Ravina Jr. (6th); Sherwin Carrera (7th); Joseph Millanes (8th); Virgilio Muena (9th); and Tomas Martinez (10th).
After the inspirational talk given by Bayambang Mayor Leo de Vera to the participants, the moustache-donning mayor flagged off the 90 participants at 10:40 a.m. at the Pangasinan State University compound.
The hizzoner's wife, the tall, young and appealing SK federation president of the town Mila de Vera handed the prizes to the winners.
