Arroyo inaugurates new police building

MAPANDAN -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, along with National Police chief Arturo Lomibao, inaugurated on Tuesday the new two-storey building of the Mapandan police.

The local police unit used to occupy a portion of the Municipal Hall's ground floor.

Lomibao told the local media that 210 new police stations from all over the country have so far been programmed for construction since he assumed office in July last year.

The construction of 31 new police stations has been completed to date and that of 43 police buildings is ongoing, including those in San Fabian, Mangatarem, Bani and Rosales towns in Pangasinan.

The construction of 136 others is under process but Lomibao assured these are already funded.

Under the category of compact police buildings or stations (others located inside the Provincial Police Headquarters), Lomibao said five have been completed, three are undergoing construction while 32 are under process.

Meanwhile, President Arroyo committed P1 billion annual fund for the PNP during the service command's anniversary last January. This will be used to upgrade the police manpower requirement, patrol or mobility requirements, firearms and communication equipment, among others.

Northern Police District Director Leopoldo Bataoil, former spokesperson for the PNP, said when he came home to Pangasinan, recruitment quota has been increased to 3,000 annually for a period of five years because of additional budget.

Fifteen percent of the quota is allotted for women as requested by the President. (LCMY)
