Village execs not paid to gather signatures: vice guv
MALASIQUI -- Pangasinan Vice Governor Oscar Lambino has denied allegations that national and provincial officials paid barangay leaders to gather signatures from the people seeking amendments in the Constitution.
Lambino said the barangay officials are involved in the activity simply because somebody has to see to it that the signatures are authentic and not forged.
This is necessary because these signatures will have to pass through the verification process that will be conducted by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
"This was not a moro-moro. This was the true initiative of the people and, of course, with the help of local leaders," Lambino said.
He said there is nothing wrong with the move because the people's initiative will be explained to the people. "We want the people to be aware so that they will be empowered to make the right decision when the time comes," he said.
The amendment, he added, will have to go through a plebiscite in which the people will be the final judge. (Pangasinan Star/Sunnex)
