Driver shot dead

ALAMINOS CITY -- The observance of Independence Day here last Thursday was marred with the killing of a mini-bus driver in Poblacion, this city.

The victim was calling for passengers bound for Bolinao when unidentified assailants gunned him down.

Alaminos Police Superintendent Lloyd Millan said they are considering two angles as motives behind the killing: one, his recurrent loading of passengers at the spot where he was killed and second could be related to love triangle.

The victim was identified as Santos Mendez, 38, married, a resident of Barangay San Antonio, this city. He drove a Boltex Express mini-bus plying Bolinao-Dagupan City route.

Investigation showed that at 5 a.m. last Thursday, Mendez parked his mini-bus in front of Nepo Mart in Poblacion to load passengers for Bolinao. He was supposed to pick up the mini-bus conductor along the way to Bolinao.

Accordingly, while calling for passengers, one gunman went near him and successively shot him. Two others acted as lookouts. The suspects then walked away after killing Mendez.

The investigators recovered four empty shells and one slug of caliber .45 mm pistol at the crime scene.

Millan said Mendez was allegedly warned earlier by drivers and operators of the passenger vans parked at the Nepo Mart area not to pick up passengers at the vicinity. He did not heed to their warning.

On the love triangle angle, said Millan, Mendez allegedly impregnated his married girlfriend.

Millan said Mendez's daily schedule could have been traced by the suspects.

Some witnesses are afraid to give statements at the police. Millan said they will ask them to help the police artist come up with the cartographic sketches of the suspects. (LCMY/Sunnex)
