Rob-slay suspect surrenders

ALAMINOS CITY -- One of the suspects in the homicide and robbery-in-band incident here more than a year ago has surrendered.

City Police Chief Lloyd Millan identified the suspect as Marcelo Tugas, chairman of Barangay Garita in the town of Bani.

Tugas surrendered last Wednesday to clear his name. His case is non-bailable.

Millan said another suspect in the crime was Sonny Avelino, councilman of Barangay Ambabaay, Bani.

Avelino and four other still unidentified suspects remain at large.

The shooting incident, aggravated by robbery-in-band, happened on September 2, 2007.

Gabriel Bautista, a nurse at the Western Pangasinan District Hospital here, together with other hospital employees, were parking their van in front of a videoke bar when they met the suspects who had just come out from the bar.

Avelino confronted Bautista as their path was blocked. Witnesses said Avelino brought out a gun and shot Bautista.

Bautista died while being treated at the hospital.

Police said it could have been a simple homicide case, but Avelino's other unidentified cohorts divested Bautista and his companions of their belongings.

Despite being dragged in the case, Tugas was reelected as barangay chairman during the past barangay elections. Avelino, three-time barangay chairman, was elected as barangay councilman.

Their warrant of arrest came out in December 2007. (LCMY/Sunnex)
