Street kids to get early Christmas gifts

DAGUPAN CITY -- The street children here under the care of the City Government's "Children At Risk Protective Unit" will receive early Christmas gifts on Wednesday.

As part of the Children's Month Celebration, they will be taught on Wednesday on how to recycle and how to convert soft drink cans and plastic containers into cash.

City Population Program Officer Eiren Manaois said these children have to be taught livelihood programs for them to be productive.

City Administrator Alvin Fernandez, chairman of the Children's Month Celebration, will lead the distribution of sleepers to the children.

The Kiwanis Club of Dagupeña, on the other hand, will distribute hand towels with soap in support for the City Government's campaign against diarrhea and cholera.

Kiwanis Division I lieutenant governor Minnie Caburnay said it is important to teach these children basic cleanliness to keep them away from illnesses often caused by poor personal hygiene.

Aside from these activities, there is also the Operation Kuto by the City Tourism Office, Storytelling Sessions at the City Library, and street tutorials by Liwawa ed Asinan Foundation or Leaf.

Other non-government organizations in the city have also organized their own activities catering to different sectors of children, all scheduled this month. (LCMY/Sunnex)
