Silapan happy over drop of dengue cases By Marites Espartero
Health Officer Dr. Rogelio Silapan is happy on the big decrease in dengue cases in Zamboanga City.
Compared to last year the drop in the number of dengue cases is about 60 percent.
Last year, the City Health Officer recorded 224 dengue fever cases coming from the different barangays in the City.
The figure of 224 cases is for the months of January to June 2001.
"It was like an Epidemic last year," Silapan said.
Compared to other places in the region Zamboanga City was the top-notcher in dengue in the year 2001.
Record show that for the first six (6) month of the year 2001 Zamboanga del Norte reported 14 cases, Zamboanga del Sur- 9, Zamboanga Sibugay - 7, Basilan - 0 and Zamboanga City -224 cases.
Silapan does not have the number of cases for the first six month of this year for the provinces, but for Zamboanga City the number of dengue fever cases is only 84.
It is already the rainy season and suitable for mosquitoes to breed in stagnant water.
However Silapan said, the number of dengue cases is comparatively low.
This is due to the educational campaign of the City Health office and the fumigation of the affected barangays, he said.
Silapan said that, fumigation only gives temporary solution but educational campaign is the best to inform people on what to do to prevent the spread of the disease.
Last week city health office personnel fumigated four barangays, namely: Tetuan, Upper Calarian, Talon Talon and Baliwasan.
Silapan said that aside from actual fumigation, health personnel also inspect and evaluate conditions in the barangays and call the people to go out and clean their surroundings. |
