No arrest without warrant for Jullabi By Felino m. Santos
POLICE will not lay its hands on self styled chairman of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) for Western Mindanao Sharrif Jullabi.
In a television interview the Thursday, City Police Director Supt. Mario Yanga said he will not and cannot order the arrest of Jullabi without the proper court order.
Yanga gave this reaction to reports that military officials said it is up to the police to arrest Jullabi.
The military has already named Jullabi as the new spokesman of the Abu Sayyaf for his penchant to claim access to the extremist group.
The challenge for Yanga and the police to arrest Jullabi rest on the fact that although he enjoys the comfort of living in Zamboanga City Jullabi has never stopped threatening the people and the military, claiming chairmanship of the MILF in the region.
An open letter published in local newspapers said Jullabi "is a dangerous man, a rebel at that and at the same time, he has access and free to move in kidnappers liars in Sulu."
While several suspected Abu Sayyaf members has been arrested, Jullabi was never arrested although he moves about freely in Zamboanga and conduct interviews with media almost on a daily basis.
Jullabi also claims to have "control over the MILF in the region and warns that his followers will swiftly react with just one call from him."
The open letter also said that although the government has already signed peace agreements with the MILF, Jullabi continue to air war threats against the military and the government.
It is common knowledge in Zamboanga and based on his open statements that he advocates the creation of an Islamic State in Mindanao and open warfare against the government. |
