Man drives mosquitoes away by burning house

FIRE, reportedly caused by the intentional burning of a cardboard box inside a house, destroyed a two-story building at the Atilano Compound, Canelar, this city at about 12:55 a.m. Thursday.

Fire investigator SPO3 Lorenzo Constantino estimated the damage caused by the fire at P100,000.

Initial investigation said that Crecencio Ocureza, 51, intentionally set fire to a cardboard box inside the house to drive mosquitoes away.

The former Army man, said to be a resident of Bato Siay, Zamboanga del Sur, did not realize that he was already setting fire to the house because embers from the burning cardboard box set fire to other parts of the room.

Ocureza reported got angry because he cannot drive away the mosquitoes in the bedroom he was occupying at the second floor of the house and so he set up a bonfire right inside the room.

Fireman SFO2 Jeffrey Lacay said Josie Lopez reportedly owns the house.

Other than destroying the house, the fire also caused first-degree burns to Ocureza.

"The relatives are now trying to seek help to Zamboanga City Medical Center to put the suspect at Ward 9," Lacay said. Marites Espartero
