Media asked to lessen panic causing updates on Iraq war
By Jess E. Alcoran

CITY Mayor Maria Clara L Lobregat has called on all media practitioners of Zamboanga City to be careful in reporting updates on the war in Iraq that might only increase the panic in the public.

Lobregat said that media plays an important role in the dissemination of information to the public more particularly on the current conflict in the Middle East.

Although the Chief Executive has already directed the local police, the military and the Task Force Zamboanga to be on alert at all times and enforce all the necessary security measure that would ensure the safety of the residents, it is also the duty and moral obligation of the media not to allow people to be panicky over news reports regarding the current happenings in the Middle East, mayor Lobregat pointed out.

The mayor also added that with regards to the prices of commodities especially on the effects of the war in Iraq she said that the Department of Trade Industry is giving her a weekly report on prices of prime commodities, which is being monitored by the DTI from time to time.

Mayor Lobregat said that so far, she did not receive any report of any incident of violence within the city over speculation that some sympathizers of Iraq President Saddam Hussein living in this part of the region would create trouble.

The city's Chief Executive has appealed to the public to be vigilant and just be calm amidst the present situation, which is being experienced worldwide.
