City puts up steel bridge in Vitali
By Jess E. Alcoran

THE Zamboanga City Engineer's Office is putting up a pre-fabricated steel bridge to connect Vitali Highway to Sitio Bataan just after the Barangay Vitali proper.

City Engineer Luis V. Despalo said work on the project started last Monday and is expected to be completed within 45 working days.

The project is being implemented by the administration and is not included among the projects under question for being awarded to contractors by bidding or negotiation.

According to Despalo the pre-fabricated bridge is part of a foreign aid program started during the administration of President Joseph Estrada dubbed the President Bridge Program.

Only concrete posts need to be erected at the project site wherein the prefabricated bridge will be laid.

The Vitali-Bataan project is the ninth steel pre-fabricated bridge that the city of Zamboanga has received from foreign countries like Australia and the United Kingdom.

Each steel pre-fabricated bridge has the capacity to withstand weight of up to 15 tons.

There were other steel pre-fabricated already installed in several barangays of like Abong-Abong, Luyahan, Culianan, Pasobolong, Curuan, Maasin, Bunguiao and San Roque.

Sometime last year Despalo attended the Regional Development Council in Pagadian City wherein he requested for at least 24 units of pre-fabricated steel.

Despalo said that his office is still awaiting the delivery of the said 24 units from either Australia or United Kingdom via Manila.
