No coin shortage -- DTI

DEPARTMENT of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Zamboanga City Director Severino M. Landingin assured the public that there is no coin shortage in the city.

The DTI assurance came after the office received several complaints that most pharmacies and department stores give candies instead of coins as loose change.

The use of candies as a medium of exchange has now become rampant.

Complainants said that owners of these business establishments claim that there are no coins available.

Landingin verified this allegation with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, which denied the claim.

Severino also warned business owners on the use of candies because it is a violation of the Price Tag Law.

He said that those who will use this unfair trade practice would be charged with the administrative fine of not less that 500 but not more than 300,000 pesos depending on the gravity of the offense.

The owner will also face sanction and cancellation of business permit.

One drugstore in the city is now facing charges after violating this Surprise Tag Law.

"Some people may just take this for granted but consumers should know their rights. They should be aware of this because big offenses start with small ones," he added. MMG
