Jobless in ZamPen now 218,000

THE unemployment rate in the Zamboanga Peninsula increased from 6.1 percent in January 2002 to 7.2 percent at the same time this year, the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) revealed.

Dole regional director Madam Chita Cilindro said this indicates that the number of unemployed rose from 210,000 to 218,000 persons as of early this year.

Cilindro attributed the high unemployment rate in the Zamboanga Peninsula to the high population rate of the youth, from which most of the jobseekers belong.

She also said that the increase in the unemployment rate is the decrease in the number of investors because of the peace and order situation prevailing in the area. This is true not only in Zamboanga Peninsula but all over the country.

However, according to Cilindro, the absence of foreign investors means that local investors can put up their respective businesses without fear of competition from foreigners.

Cilindro also said that employment does not only mean wage employment or salary employment in the private sector but also the self-employed.

In this regard, the Dole encourages self-employment through income generating activities like livelihood. According to Cilindro, the country, especially Mindanao, has a lot of resources.

To maximize these resources, Dole is providing training on livelihood skills for those who would like to put up their business. JEA
