Agan, Aranez are Lakas-NUCD bets
By Jess E. Alcoran

FORMER mayor Vitaliano D. Agan remained as the chairman of the Lakas-NUCD political party for Zamboanga City, said engineer Efren Araņez, also a former mayor, on Thursday.

Both former city mayors of Zamboanga City are still in Manila after they attended the Lakas-NUCD political party convention.

According to Araņez, Agan is also regional assistant to congressman Isidoro Real of Zamboanga Del Sur. Real is the regional chairman of the political party of Lakas-NUCD for Region 9.

Based on the message send by Araņez from Manila, he said he and Agan are set to run in the forthcoming presidential elections in 2004.

They were given up to November 30 to file their certificate of candidacy. Araņez, however, did not mention as to what his and Agan's position will be.

There are persistent rumors going around the city that both former mayors of Zamboanga City will run for city councilor.

A few months earlier, Councilor Charlie Mariano tried to contest the chairmanship of the Lakas in the city. It appears that Mariano would like to wrest the Lakas chairmanship from ex-mayor Agan.

Accordingly, they are waiting for Congressman Real to come to Zamboanga City to resolve the local Lakas chairmanship. Apparently, Real failed to visit Zamboanga City during his scheduled visit to Zamboanga City last month.

It was presumed that Agan and Congressman Real met in Manila during the Lakas-NUCD convention. Real reportedly designated Agan to the hierarchy of the Lakas political party in Zamboanga City. (JEA)
