ZCWD eyes P86M system rehab loan By Jess Alcoran
THE Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) applied for a P86.486-million loan with the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) sourced from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
In presentation of the proposed rehabilitation project for the local water system last Wednesday, Zamboanga City Water District Board Chairman Vicente Jaldon said the facility intends to replace the entire old water pipes network in the city. The pipes were constructed before World War II.
He said most of the old water pipe lines are now brittle and at the same time deteriorating and need total replacement.
If the pipes cannot be repaired, a new network of pipes will replace them.
The old water pipe network that was laid out as early as l911-1913 is located under several buildings. This has to be canceled and replaced with new water pipe network lines.
Another aspect of the water improvement presented by the Zamboanga City Water District proposed water supply improvement is the construction of deep wells.
The production wells will be at La Paz, Tulungatung, Ayala, including treatment facilities at Barrio Cawit to Sinunuc. The ZCWD project presentation is an ADB/LWUA funded project.
There was no mention yet as to when the ADB/LWUA fund will be released to the ZCWD. The local water utility would repay the loan to LWUA at 15 percent interest per annum.
The initial area for pipe laying would cover Pasonanca down to Cesar Climaco Avenue, Don Pablo Lorenzo Street, Gov. Lim Ave., Gov. Camins road, Canelar Moret, Triplet Road, Rio Hondo, Don Basilio Navarro and San Jose road all within the city proper.
