No poison in school pipes By Jess E. Alcoran
ZAMBOANGA City Water District (ZCWD) Assistant General Manager Alejo Rojas has denied reports that the water coming from the leaking pipes of the ZCWD at the Southcom Elementary School was contaminated.
Rojas said that the water samples taken from the Southcom Elementary School tested negative of contamination.
Rojas said he requested his quality control officer to coordinate with the City Health Office (CHO) as it was also conducting separate analysis of the water coming from the ZCWD pipeline in the area. The alleged contamination was initially blamed for the death of two pupils and another 18 school children admitted at the Zamboanga City Medical Center last Saturday.
City Health Officer Rodel Agbulos said he suspects that diarrhea or cholera disease might have caused the illness of the victims.
Rojas said he is expecting the result from CHO anytime as it has also conducted water analysis taken from the Southcom Elementary School water pipe connections.
Rojas said that the ZCWD had taken six water samples from the same water connections of the school.
Some were taken before the water meter connections and there were water samples also taken after the water meter connections.
And all had negative results of water contamination. Rojas said the cause of the
water borne disease might have come from another source.
Upon the recommendation of the CHO, the leaking pipe connections in the area were temporarily closed until the results of the analysis are done.
Rojas said that the school could still avail of the water supply from the Southcom Elementary School, as there are actually two water connections there.
