Farms provided panels for drying harvest
By Jess E. Alcoran

ZAMBOANGA City farmers and fishermen may now dry rice and corn harvests, fish and seaweed using government-provided cemented panels measuring 420 square meters each.

Eight of 20 cemented panels were given last month to farmers and fishermen. The following barrios were provided the panels: Limaong Island (provided three sections); while the rest were located at the Tumaga district; Manicahan district; Bolong and Culianan district. Another eight are located at barrio Vitali.

Last year, 20 sections were given to local farmers. City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat said each panel costs P100,000.00.

Palacat said more panels will soon be given to farmers.

Meanwhile, City Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat has agreed to tap upland rice planting in next year's planting season.

City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat, who made the suggestion to the mayor, said although there is little maintenance for upland rice planting, few farmers have resorted to the method.

Palacat said farmers gain from growing upland rice variety since this type of crop does not need too much water for irrigation.

He added there is bigger area for upland rice fields than lowland rice fields.
He said 8,000 hectares are available for upland rice fields, compared to 5,000 hectares of available lowland rice fields.

A budget of P10 million has been released for the preparation of upland rice seed variety in time for planting season early next year, said Lobregat. JEA
