Editorial: Inevitable gov't investment
It is fortunate, despite existing infrastructure problems, Mindanao stands confident of having a pool of human capital well steeped in science and technology and capable to lead towards fulfilling its goal as the 3rd E-service hub in the Philippines.
What is urgent and imperative this late in the day is to fast track national information, appreciation and awareness campaign on ICT so as to get as much people interested and motivated to utilize these technologies in order for them to benefit fully from the same.
Also, the inadequate state of telecommunications services has been a constraint to the island's economic development. Improving and modernizing its telecommunications infrastructure will facilitate all forms of business and agri-industrial development making products more globally competitive and generate needed foreign exchange earnings.
Adequate systems will lead to marketing efficiency and enhance information exchanges and interaction within and between business sectors that would develop international trade and commerce. Reliable telecommunication services will greatly increase the efficiency and effectiveness of government programs and services.
These improvements will lead to significant savings in time, energy, resources, and an enhanced social being. Consistent with the vision and objectives as contained in IT21, Mindanao shall harness the full potential of information and communications technology (ICT) for the island's economic development and global competitiveness. It shall aggressively pursue new initiatives that would enable Mindanao to actively participate and prosper from the integrated Knowledge Economy (K-Economy) of the 21st century.
In this age of Internet evolution, nothing else is more important for every country than to get on-line because it is believed to be the most crucial ingredient for economic and social progress.
UNESCO, in cooperation with the World Bank and the USAID, and other international organizations are trying to convince decision makers of the Third World nations that investment in this new technology is inevitable if they were to participate in promoting and improving life conditions for all.
The Philippines is not spared from this pressure. The Philippines, we mean, including not forgetting Mindanao.
