Isabela cops seized hot timber
POLICE in Isabela City intercepted Friday a cargo truck loaded with illegally cut timber at a checkpoint within the city proper.
The truck, with plate number JHL-967, and driven by Halimul Hasilul, 30, married of Masola, Isabela, is presently impounded, at the Isabela Police Station.
Its load of timber, numbering 52 pieces, were seized and are also in the custody of the Isabela police awaiting proper disposition by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro).
Police confiscated the timber when the truck driver could not present any pertinent paper from Cenro.
Residents in the area informed Sun.Star that rampant illegal logging activities in Basilan continue unabated.
A concerned citizen called up DXMR Radyo ng Bayan Friday night, complaining the alleged rampant illegal cutting of timber near the city's watershed area in the boundary of Limpapa, west of the city.
He reported that trucks loaded with illegally cut timber pass by military and police checkpoints daily without being inspected as they are said to possess pertinent papers issued by DENR.
He said the wood cargoes are being entrusted to two big lumberyards within the city proper.
He expressed alarm that unless illegal logging is stopped in the watershed area, the city will experience serious flashfloods during rainy days because of continued forest denudation. Becky Gregorio
