Zambo's garbage help sustain farmers' yield
By Jess E. Alcoran

TRASH-turned-compost materials from the city's garbage form part of the fertilizer that sustain farmers' need.

This is courtesy of the City Agriculturist's Office, which provides them for free.

The City Agriculturist's Office is buying at least P350,000 worth of compost-fertilizer every year from the city's Material Recovery Facility, which produces fertilizer out of the daily garbage collected in the city.

This was learned from City Public Service Office chief Engr. Reinerio Gonzales whose office is in charge of the management of the Material Recovery Facility Plant, situated at Bagsakan Center, Sta. Cruz, this city.

Engr. Gonzales said the City Agriculturist Office is distributing the compost-fertilizers to the farmers of Zamboanga City for free as assistance for the enhancement of their crops.

Engr. Gonzales said the Material Recovery Facility Plant is producing not less than 18 to 20 tons of fertilizer a day.

This is out of the 25 percent to 30 percent diverted biodegradable garbage being collected.

The City Public Service Office is collecting some 70 to 100 tons of garbage every day.

The compost-fertilizer is being sold at P1.50 a kilo.

The Material Recovery Facility Plant has an abundance of compost fertilizer, and Engr. Gonzales is looking forward for a marketing scheme by which the fertilizer can be sold outside of Zamboanga City.

Part of the bulk of compost fertilizer is being deposited at Lumbangan garbage dumping site, situated in the east coast.

Some are deposited at the Material Recovery Facility Plant, at Bagsakan Center, Sta. Cruz, this city.

As this developed, a national convention of Solid Waste Association of the Philippines will be held in Zamboanga City sometime in the month of October, this year.

Engr. Gonzales said the secretariat of the Solid Waste Association of the Philippines will be in Zamboanga City by July, this year, to arranged the schedule, venue and itinerary of the participants.

At least 500 participants from the Solid Waste Association of the Philippines are expected to arrive in the city for the convention.
