Police arrest 4 carnappers
By Jun Feliciano

THE Tetuan police nabbed Wednesday night four suspected carnappers and recovered "chop-chop" parts of cannibalized motorcycles from their hideout at Sebastain Drive, Mampang this city.

Tetuan Police Chief Senior Inspector Palermo Ramos said his team managed to collar the four after the reported loss of a single motorcycle the Tuesday night, at Logoy Diutay.

The four suspects, two of them identified as Askar Maut, of Logoy Diutay, and Atri Suwaib are scheduled for inquest before the City Prosecutor's Office. They are presently detained at the Tetuan police.

One of their arrested companions was only identified as a certain Francisco from Apolinario Loop.

They were under intense questioning by investigators after giving conflicting identities.

Ramos surmised that the carnappers' group cannibalized the stolen motorcycles and placed the "chop-chop" parts inside the sacks possibly for shipment to other places outside the city, like Sulu and Basilan.

"This could be their modus operandi in their carnapping activities. This group comes only from the city like Mampang, Talon-Talon, Logoy Diutay," Ramos declared.

Earlier, ZCPO Investigation Section chief Lt. Carlos Castillo, Jr., also revealed that there are also out-of-town carnappers, operating here in the city.

He based his suspicion on the recent recovery of a stolen motorcycle in the city from Lapuyan, Zamboanga del Sur.

Castillo said these carnappers could be in cahoots with their local counterparts in victimizing owners of single motorcycles in the city.

There were several registered cases of carnapping, involving single motorcycles in the city, this year, the police revealed to Sun.Star.

Castillo advised motorcycle owners to properly secure and padlocked their motor vehicles, if not chain them, to prevent from being stolen by carnappers while being parked in conspicuous sections of the city.
