IT's now official, Maj. Gen. Generoso Senga, the commanding general of the 6th Infantry Division based in Central Mindanao, will take over as the commander of Southern Command, effective today, June 16.
Senga will replace Brig. Gen. Roy Kyamko, who is retiring from the military service.
Armed Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Narciso Abaya will preside over the change of command that will take place at the Southcom grounds, in Calarian, at 9:30 a.m. today.
Military officials as well as city government officials are expected to attend the formal turnover ceremony today.
Southcom information officer Col. Bob Bacarro said Maj. Gen. Senga is taking over the highest post in Southern Command per General Order (GO) 751, signed by President Gloria Macapagal ArroyoThursday.
The Southern Command is the biggest military installation outside of Metro Manila.
Senga is a battle-tested military official who has a number of success stories in numerous campaigns launched against insurgents, including the Abu Sayyaf and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) during his previous assignments.
Earlier, there were reports that an official with an OIC or officer-in-charge status would be designated, pending the official announcement from Malacañang. However, Bacarro made the announcement late yesterday afternoon.
