Tuesday, July 20, 2004 Illegal recruiter arrested; 2 victims rescued at port By Nelly Martinez
A SUSPECTED illegal recruiter, who was with two victims, was arrested Monday at the local wharf.
The arrest was made by a member of the Philippine Marines detailed with the Bureau of Immigration.
The police identified the suspect as Richard Barbadillo Taping of Misamis Oriental while his two victims were identified as Emily Badilla Oculani, 25, of Bohol and Joan Tumbaga, 24, of Misamis Oriental.
Initial investigation revealed that around 10 a.m. the suspect and his two victims failed to present pertinent travel papers and "show money" to T/Sgt. Eduardo Leron and some immigration officials of their trip to Malaysia.
Confiscated from Taping were three Weesam Express tickets and passports for Sandakan, Malaysia.
The two victims said they were recruited as Guest Relations Officers (GROs) by Taping.
The police are readying charges of illegal recruitment against taping in court.
His victims were turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development office's Crisis Intervention Unit for proper disposition.
