2 Council committees to expedite tricycle fare rates
By Abigail Tan

THE chairman of the Committee on Franchise in the City Council has promised to initiate moves to expedite the passage of the ordinance that sets new fare rates for tricycles.

This developed as a new round of increase in oil prices took effect nationwide the other day.

Councilor Roel Natividad said his Committee on Franchise and the Committee on Ordinances and Resolutions Councilor Juan Climaco Elago have conducted public hearings in preparation for the proposal's presentation on the floor.

The two committees, he said, are still in the process of collating other inputs for possible inclusion in the proposed ordinance.

The proposal is an amendment to Ordinance 185, also known as the law regulating the operation of motorized tricycles in Zamboanga.

From the present P4.00, the fare rate is proposed to be increased to P6.50 for the first kilometer and additional P1.00 for the succeeding kilometer.

Natividad said the need to set new fare rates is urgent as complaints of overcharging tricycle drivers are mounting.

Several sectors, specifically the consumers and the tricycle operators and drivers, are demanding the immediate setting of new rates to prevent conflicts.

Based on the present tricycle ordinance, the City Council has the power to set new rates as well as rules and regulations in the operation of tricycles in the city.
