City's street sweepers sport new uniforms

SOME 50 street sweepers of Zamboanga City are now in yellow jumpers, matched with long sleeve T-shirt, as new uniform.

The street sweepers' new uniform comes from the yearly clothing allowance for street sweepers.

This was disclosed by City Public Service Office chief Engineer Reinerio Gonzales in an interview with Sun.Star Zamboanga Friday.

Gonzales said that his office started the implementation of the street sweepers' uniform only last July.

Gonzales said a regular street sweeper received P4,000 clothing allowance yearly.

Gonzales said he instructed them to, at least, have two sets of uniform for the daily chores.

When asked why he chose the yellow color for he sweepers', Gonzales said yellow color is much visible even at a reasonable distance for hem to be seen by motorists, and if the sweepers are doing their job or not.

Gonzales said that street a sweeper of the city does not have day off. They worked 30 days a month and 365 days a year. He said street sweepers worked on Good Fridays during Holy Week, Yuletide season, including Christmas Day, New Year's Day and on Sundays.

The city's street sweepers report for work at 6:00 0'clock a.m. to 12:00 NN for the first shift. Then another shift from 12:00 NN to 6:00 p.m., and the last shift is from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

A regular street sweepers received a minimum salary of P5,800 a month, While a casual street sweeper received P231.00 per day. The city's street sweepers are cleaning the areas within the city proper only, Engr. Gonzales stressed.
