Saturday, August 14, 2004 Malaysians eye Zambo for motorcycle plant By Jess E. Alcoran
Malaysian businessmen paid a call on City Mayor Celso Lobregat last Thursday and hinted that a big business venture is coming to Zamboanga.
Lobregat said the Malaysian investors' purpose of visiting Zamboanga City is for the possibility of putting up an assembly plant for Malaysian-made motorcycles.
Demark Motors Corporation, based in Sarawak, Malaysia, is planning to establish an assembly plant for motorcycles, at the Zamboanga Free Port Economic Zone, at San Ramon, west of the city.
Based on the brochures showed by Lobregat to the media the trademark of the motorcycle is "Dewark."
There are several models of motorcycles aside from the usual two-wheeler motorbike to be assembled based on the catalogue of the Malaysian investors.
The putting up a motorcycle assembly plant by the Malaysian investors in Zamboanga City will partly solved the unemployment problem of the city.
The engine spare parts would be imported from other country. Accordingly, the Malaysian investors are also looking for possible source of materials.
Following the standard sizes of tires, this can be available locally.
The Malaysian investors are looking forward to marketing their motorcycle products in other parts of Mindanao, aside from Zamboanga City, upon the realization of their motorcycle assembly plant in the city.
Lobregat hoped that after their initial talks, the Malaysian investors would return to Zamboanga to finalize their investment plan in the city. (Jess E. Alcoran)
