NUJP welcomes surrender of journalist killer
THE National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) welcomes the surrender of former police officer Guillermo Wapile, the alleged gunman of Pagadian City journalist Edgar Damalerio.
NUJP hopes that this development can help the police in redeeming its name.
"We wish we could say that Wapile's surrender will break the culture of impunity that allows the series of murders of Filipino journalists to take place. The Damalerio case is just one of the more than 55 cases since 1986 that remains unsolved. And unless the killer and mastermind/s behind the Damalerio murder are tried and convicted, justice will remain elusive, " Carlos Conde, NUJP secretary-general said.
Conde said the PNP must work harder to arrest the suspects in the other cases or this culture of impunity will continue.
"We also appeal to the Department of Justice not to grant Wapile's reported request for bail. Freeing him, no matter that it is temporary, will perpetuate the fear being faced by the witnesses and family of Damalerio," Conde added.
