8 soldiers wounded in Sulu encounter
By Jun Feliciano

EIGHT soldiers were wounded in a fierce gun battle with heavily armed Abu Sayyaf bandits, under Commander Radulan Sahiron, at the remote barangay of Pansul, in Patikul, Sulu, late Monday night, a report said Wednesday.

A belated report reaching the Southern Command stated that the marine soldiers from the 62nd Force Reconnaissance Company were on combat patrol in the area when they encountered Sahiron's group in a 30-minute heavy fighting.

The bandits later withdrew, bringing along their undetermined number of casualties, according to the military report.

The wounded soldiers were airlifted Tuesday to Southcom Hospital, at Camp Navarro, Upper Calarian, this city.

Although, the initial report stated that five marines were wounded, the latest casualties reached eight, according to an intelligence report reaching Southcom late Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, three persons, including an alleged sub-leader of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), were killed in a firefight Monday, at Barangay Patao, Maimbung, Sulu, the Southern Command reported Wednesday.

Slain were Misuara Amilan, the alleged Abu Sayyaf sub-commander, Kiddo Alenia Noe and a certain Saren.

The report disclosed that the group of Barangay chief Almudzni Amil of Patao clashed with the group of a certain Jaka Igasan.

After the fighting, Igasan and his group fled to Pata Island, the report added.

The military in the area are still investigating the motive for their feud.

The military revealed that the village chieftain of Patao is the son of the slain suspected Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Amilan.

At least two others, namely, Amilan's wife and their nephew were wounded in the said encounter, the military report stated.

The army's 53rd Infantry Battalion was sent to the area as a peacekeeping force.
