Jail tightens security against rescue attempt for jailed rebels

THE Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC) has tightened its security measures to thwart any attempt by sympathizers to spring out two inmates who are presently imprisoned for charges of rebellion.

ZCRC head Chief Inspector Victor Borres told Sun.Star Zamboanga when interviewed Tuesday that Ustadz Alawi Jagi was committed to their jail last Monday for his alleged involvement in the infamous uprising of the MNLF-break-away faction that occurred late of 2001.

He was escorted to ZCRC, Center along Varela Street by marine soldiers, according to Borres.

The other inmate identified as Hamdani Salian Jumdan, alias Dr. Abu, was committed to the city jail last year yet, Borres disclosed. Jumdan is charged for similar offense in connection with the Cabatangan incident, Borres added.

He said they are not taking any chances as his jail guards are directed to be on a 24-hour watch to strictly secure the 3,000 sq. meter perimeter of the 2-storey city jail.

"We are tightly securing our jail center as my men are on a 24-hour watch to prevent any incident, especially we have two who are jailed for charges of rebellion", Borres said.

The two prisoners are quartered in their separate cells to prevent them from any discourse to hatch a possible escape plan, according to Borres.

"They are separated from their cells to avoid any communication", Borres revealed.

The two were said to be among the more than 300 renegade members of the Moro National Liberation Front(MNLF) break-away group that took hostage about 200 civilians living near the vicinity of the Cabatangan Complex they laid siege in a simultaneous uprising staged by their leader Chairman Nur Misuari in Jolo, Sulu who was then the governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) of November 2001.

Misuari was later captured in Malaysia where he fled after the short-lived rebellion. He is presently detained in Taguig, Rizal facing also rebellion charges.

Misuari's group here was led by his nephew Julhamri Misuari and was allowed free passage to their lairs somewhere in the east coast in exchange for the release of all their hostages. They were escorted to their safe place by the military on board a convoy of six-by-six trucks.

The ZCRC is situated in the heart of the city which is near the populated section of its bustling commercial district along Climaco Avenue.

Borres said a safer area with a size of 10,000 sq. meters or one hectare is ideal for a prison center to be situated outside the thick population of the city probably in Mercedes near the PNP headquarters of Camp Abendan or in a government property in San Roque.

He said an ideal prison center will pose no danger to the civilians incase, God forbids, a mass escape happens, Borres assessed.

Borres was adjudged 2004 City Warden of the Year nationwide for his exemplary performance in running effectively the administration of the ZCRC. (Jun Feliciano)
