Zamboanga spared from typhoon
By Jun Feliciano

ZAMBOANGA City and the rest of the country except Luzon were spared by the wrath of typhoon Yoyong Friday.

Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Director Atilano Ade, in a radio interview Friday morning, said that during their 24-hour alert in Region 9, "We didn't receive any report of untoward incident."

Ade said when their office received the report of the typhoon, they immediately alerted different Provincial Disaster Coordinating Councils in Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay provinces.

He said the City of Zamboanga is their center for the various volunteer radio communication groups like Alert, React, The Crime Watch, and other similar volunteer groups for monitoring purposes during the occurrence of any disaster in their area of responsibility.

Ade said they were closely watching areas identified as Sibugay river, where the towns of Payao, Siay, Imelda, Diplahan up to Bayog are being traversed by Sibugay river; Salug river in Zamboanga del Sur, where Mahayag, Aurora and Tambulig are situated; and the towns of Manukan, where 44 people were reported killed during the recent flashfloods this year; Sindangan, because of having numerous river systems; and Siocon, because of its big river leading to the cities of Dipolog and Dapitan aside from Manukan and nearby town of Polanco.

Ade advised people to know their location whether it is a flat or low level area or near the river sources, and immediately vacate the place and seek for a higher ground because of the hazards of the flashfloods.

He also revealed that the potential areas, where landslide can result, are a portion of Vitali in the city, and Buug town going to Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur.

"So far, we are happy and thankful that we are being spared by this calamity of (Super typhoon) Yoyong," he said.

At least nine people reportedly died due to the typhoon in Luzon.
