Mayor raises fund for tsunami victims
By Jun Feliciano and Jess Alcoran

CITY Mayor Celso Lobregat on Tuesday held an emergency meeting with his key personnel at City Hall in a bid to share any form of relief assistance for the thousands of victims in Asian countries hit by tsunamis Sunday morning.

Lobregat has embarked on a fund-raising campaign to realize a substantial amount of financial aid as the city's contribution to hapless victims of tsunami triggered by tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 at Richter Scale, recorded as the deadliest in 40 years, hitting Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, including the Maldives Island.

Latest report indicates that there are more than 40,000 people who perished and millions of people were displaced aside from those reported missing due to the tsunamis.

The city's assistance coming from its fund-raising campaign will be coursed through the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) chaired by Senator Richard Gordon, whose Red Cross office in the country will in turn hand over all its immediate aids to the International red Cross that takes charge in the distribution of all its emergency relief assistance intended for the victims in the Asian countries, including Myanmar, Maldives, Bangladesh, and portion of South Africa.

Mayor Lobregat is one of the Red Cross governors in the country.

The local chief executive facilitates the collection of funds for the victims of tsunami being one of the governors of the PNRC.

Collection tables have been set up, at the lobby of City Hall starting Tuesday for the said purpose, and manned by PNRC Zamboanga Chapter personnel and volunteers to attend to those who would donate some amount.

Donors who will contribute the amount of P100 or more will be properly issued corresponding receipts while amounts below P100 will be duly acknowledge by the City Government with their names properly included in the list.

Both cash and those given in kind will be turned over by Mayor Lobregat to the PNRC in Manila.

Senator Gordon was reportedly elated for the magnanimous gesture of concern the city has always shown for victims of natural disasters that hit either here or abroad.
