Cabatangan claim issue untimely, volatile: Beng

VICE Mayor Beng Climaco said Wednesday reviving the Cabatangan ownership issue at this time when there is an on going conflict in Sulu is not appropriate, as it would bring about a delicate situation.

"The people of Zamboanga City have spoken against the occupation of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) in Zamboanga City. We hope that the wishes of Zamboanga City residents would be respected," the vice mayor stressed.

She was referring to the two plebiscites held in the past when Zamboanga City residents voted to be outside of the Armm coverage.

The revival of the Cabatangan ownership issue came about after Armm governor Dr. Farouk Hussein announced that the Regional Legislative Assembly (RLA) would soon hold office in the Cabatangan Complex, as its office in Cotabato City was razed to the ground.

In a press conference, the Armm governor said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has given him the go signal to reoccupy Cabatangan and he is just awaiting the funds for the purpose.

Meanwhile, the lady vice mayor hoped that hostilities in Sulu would end soon for the sake of the victims, who are mostly children, women and their families.

On the other hand, she said the peace and order situation in Mindanao would be one of the issues she would present to President Arroyo, if given the chance, during a forum of the National Movement of Young Legislators (NMYL) in Manila next week.

President Arroyo would be the guest during the NMYL meeting that will be held at the Westin Philippine Plaza.
