Council to resolve proposed 'trike' fare hike
By Jun Feliciano

THE City Council is now tackling in its regular Thursday session the recommendations of the Committee of the Whole, which conducted a public hearing Wednesday on the tricycles' fare matrix.

Vice Mayor Beng Climaco, who chaired the Committee of the Whole during the hearing, said she would opt for the adoption of the P10 flat rate and 2 pesos per additional kilometer regardless of the number of passengers.

"I'll still adopt the P10 and P2 hikes, because, let's face it, the appeal is for the tricycles not to make their fares very expensive for their boarding passengers, being detrimental to our economy and to our tourism," Climaco opined.

Councilor Rey Candido filed the proposed tricycle fare rate increase during Wednesday's public hearing. Various sectors, tricycle organizations officials and representatives, riding public and barangay officials attended the hearing.

However, Councilor Roel Natividad, who chairs the committee on franchise, expressed confidence that the majority's approval for his proposed rate in tricycle operation of P8, plus additional P2 pesos per passenger, will gain the support of his colleagues in the council.

He said based on the series of public hearings in the past, it has been the consensus of both the riding public and the tricycle owners to agree on his said proposal.

"I appeal to my colleagues to respect my proposal, being the representative of the committee on franchise. I have been sitting down with different individuals to more or less find a win-win solution," Natividad said.

He said the chief executive has certified as urgent the resolution the long-drawn controversy on the correct rates for the tricycle passenger units

"There'll be a lot of people coming to the city this year, like the PRISAA sports fest this April when we expect 4,500 people and their companions to arrive here. This will be an impact if we can correct the fare rates (of tricycles) and the other activities coming this year in our city," Natividad observed.
