Medical mission held in conflict-stricken Sulu towns
People in Sulu, particularly in Luuk and Patikul, live in uncertainty as armed conflicts stand in their way of getting a peaceful and hopefully, better economic conditions for their families. But this did not hold concerned agencies from conducting medical mission in their areas.
Department of Social Welfare and Development and National Anti-Poverty Commission officials braved the reported hideouts of the Abu Sayaff Muslim Extremist Group in Luuk and Patikul, Sulu, for a KALAHI (Kapit Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan) community day.
The atmosphere of danger did not keep the KALAHI team from treating the residents to a rare medical mission. They were also given free medicines, seeds and seedlings, and even kitchen utensils to start-up possible livelihood projects. The children were also given supplementary feeding.
After the one-day event, the people of Luuk now looks forward to more certainty as Mayor Abdurahman Arbison discussed with the KALAHI team priority projects for their area. The KALAHI team committed funds for the construction of a farm-to-market road in Luuk that is envisioned to restart the process of rehabilitation in the conflict-damaged area.
In barangay Taglibi, Patikul, the water system project has been completed. This project is under the "Mindanao Natin" program of the Office of the President and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with the Government of the Philippines through the Mindanao Development Council (MEDCo) and the local government of Patikul.
