Gov't university to step up income-generating projects

WESTERN Mindanao State University (WMSU) President Eldigario Gonzales has vowed to step up income generating measures in a bid to accomplish more projects and programs despite the dwindling government subsidy.

Last year, the WMSU earned almost P50 million from its revenue efforts such as the corporate nursing and basic education, food center, food court rentals, university press, testing and evaluation services, computer learning center, agri-businesses as well as sale of ready made school uniforms.

In an interview over Radyo ng Bayan, Gonzales said the university has to undertake initiatives that would help raise its revenues due to the yearly reduction in the government subsidy to all state universities and colleges (SUCs).

“Our buffer is the concept of corporatization. We are looking for avenues on how to raise the income in order to offset whatever is being reduced by the national government,” the WMSU president pointed out.

Since the year 2000, the national government started to reduce the capital outlay of all SUCs. The set up will continue until such time that the capital outlay will be at the zero level. After the capital outlay, allocation for maintenance and operating expenses would also be reduced until it also reaches the zero level.

For this year, Gonzales said the budget allocated for WMSU is P210 million, which includes the operation of the Tampilisan and Dumingag integrated schools.

The continuous reduction in the capital outlay is a done deal and that the SUCs through the formidable Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (Pasuc) will no longer force the issue, the WMSU president added.
