Poll body deploys best directors to oversee Armm polls

FIVE regional election directors (RED) and other ranking officials of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) were assigned to the Autonomous region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) to handle the elections to be held there on August 8, 2005.

Comelec chairman Benjamin Abalos said the appointment of the regional directors is meant to ensure that the Armm elections would not only be peaceful but credible.

"We are undertaking all measures to ensure that the forthcoming Armm elections would be credible and orderly," Abalos added.

Abalos said Comelec-National Capital Region (NCR) RED Ferdinand Rafanan will supervise the Armm elections along with Region I RED Romeo Lobregat, Region 8 RED Adolfo Ibanez, Region 5 RED Zacarias Zaragosa and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) RED Armando Velasco.

Other officials assigned to conduct the Armm elections are lawyers Michael Dioneda, Ederlino Tabilas, assistant regional election director (ARED) of Region 2; Noli Pipo, ARED of Region I, Ephraim Bag-it of the Comelec Law Department, acting Isabela provincial election supervisor Michael Valdez, Barangay Election Affairs Department acting chief Rogelio Benjamin and lawyer Nelia Aureus.

"We are tapping the best regional directors from north to south to supervise the August 8 elections," Abalos added.

Abalos said the designation of the regional directors to handle the Armm polls does not mean that Armm RED Renato Magbutay, ARED Renato Sumalipao and provincial election supervisor Lintang Bedol have been permanently replaced.

"They have just been sidelined because their names were mentioned in the taped conversation (between President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and an election official) but this doesn't mean that they are guilty," Abalos said.

Meanwhile, Abalos said Commissioner Mehol Sadain has been assigned as commissioner-in-charge for Basilan while Resurreccion Borra is the commissioner-in-charge of Lanao del Sur while Rufino Javier will handle Sulu. Commissioner Florentino Tuason is the commissioner-in-charge of Maguindanao. (MSN/Sunnex)
